Welcome to the 2011-2012 School Year!

Dear Parents and Guardians of Emerson Students,

We hope that you had an enjoyable, fun-filled summer.  The Emerson Staff is looking forward to the new school year as we strive to provide the best possible education for Emerson students.  We take pride in providing a special place for learning and growing together as an educational family.

REGISTRATION
Online registration will be available for the upcoming school year beginning August 1, 2011.  Please go to the district's website at http://www.marion.k12.ia.us and link onto Community, then PowerSchool.  All returning families should use their passwords from last year.  If a password has been forgotten, parents can go to the "forgot my password" link.  If a password cannot be retrieved, please contact the Emerson Office at (319) 377-0183.  A letter/email explaining the registration process will be sent from the district office for new Junior Kindergarten as well as Kindergarten students, which will include a password.  As another option, there will be onsite registration Tuesday, August 9th, from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Marion High School.  If you have an incoming Kindergarten student and have not previously provided a birth certificate, please bring it to registration or bring it to the Emerson office by August 15th.  Kindergarten students will not be allowed to start their school year until the appropriate documentation is submitted.

BUSSING
If your child needs bussing the application is on the Marion website.  It can be downloaded and printed.  Please complete and return the form with payment to the business office at 777 S. 15th Street, Marion, Iowa.  Please keep in mind that bus requests take up to two weeks to process.

Textbook fees at Emerson Elementary are $30.00 for K-3 students, $20.00 for Junior Kindergarten, and are payable at registration.  Families that meet the income guidelines for free and reduced priced lunch, the Family Investment Program (FIP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or foster care children, are eligible to have student fees waived or partially waived.  Families experiencing temporary financial difficulties may be eligible for a temporary waiver of student fees.  Forms for waiver qualification will be available for registration.
Breakfast and lunch are served daily for K-3 students.  You are encouraged to send enough money to cover at least one week's worth of meals.  If you are unable to keep a positive lunch account, please request an assistance form or send cold lunch.  Durign the school year, checks written to purchase meals may be made payable to either Emerson Elementary or Marion Independent Schools.  Breakfast, lunch and milk prices are listed below.

HEALTH
All medications sent to school will be kept at the health office including cough drops and throat lozenges.  Medications must be sent in the original container with the child's name and specific directions stating the amount and time the medication is to be given.  For safety reasons, we encourage parents to transport all medication to and from school.  A medication form available online or through the school health office must be completed.

EMERGENCY CLOSING
Excessive heat or severe weather may require school to be dismissed early or we may have a delayed start.  This decision is made in the best interest of all our students.  Families should have a plan in place prior to the first day of school.  Please send a note tot he classroom teacher indicating where the student is to go if an early dismissal occurs.  We ask that you listen to the news instead of calling the school.  The Parent Handbook lists the radio and television stations, which are notified.  It also lists the website where you may sign up for email notification.
We are excited to begin another school year.  Please contact the school secretary, Mrs. Folkmann, or Mrs. Toppin, the elementary principal, at (319) 377-0183 if you have any questions or concerns.  We value your partnership in providing a safe, caring place for students to grow and learn.
